Time: 6:00 pm

Location: PB Recreation Center (1405 Diamond St, San Diego, CA 92109)

April Minutes: Link to Review

Agenda: Link to Review

Meeting Highlights:

  • John McNab will speak on the Midway Rising Sports Arena development

  • 44th Roosevelt Dinner on May 31 at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego

  • Annual Summer Picnic on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Kate Sessions

This Thursday, John McNab, a reporter and proponent of saving San Diego's costal public lands, will speak to us about the Midway Rising project and how it was the Trojan Horse used to unlock the catastrophic impacts of the entire development.

John McNab has is a proponent of saving San Diego's coastal public lands for enhanced access and enjoyment of the coast.  He was president of Save Our NTC which brought four legal actions including one regarding the city violating the 30' height limit.  He also was involved advocating for a waterfront park at the Navy Broadway site.  Recently his group, Save Our Access, brought successful legal action against the city placing measure E, the lifting of the 30' foot height limit in the Midway-Sports Arena-NAVWAR-MCRD community which resulted in the placing of a redo, measure C, on the ballot prior to doing a complete mandated CEQA review.  This issue is on appeal.

Assemblymember Tasha Boerner

Rescheduled to Speak at June 6 Meeting!

We have rescheduled California Assemblymember Tasha Boerner talk for Thursday, June 6.  She will speak with our members regarding the results of the California State Auditor's independent audit of San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) and other utilities rate increases for San Diego ratepayers and how the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approves those increases.

Heading into this high-stakes presidential election, we can take inspiration from, and find solidarity with, the local change agents who will be honored at this  year's Roosevelt Dinner. They include elected leaders, advocates, organizers, and volunteers. We hope you'll join San Diego County Democrats in recognizing them at our 44th Annual Dinner on Friday, May 31, at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego. Please email the PBDC to let us know that you want a seat at the table!   If you book on your own, specify your club's name so we can be seated together. After one all-remote event and three outdoor dinners, we're excited to be returning to the Hilton's elegant Sapphire Ballroom and Terrace, where guests will hear from featured speakers, enjoy a delicious meal, and connect with hundreds of fellow Democrats and friends. This year's theme is Sapphire Soirée -- a nod to the celebration of our Democratic community amid our ongoing work to keep this county, and this country, voting "blue."There's a discounted rate for members of Democratic Clubs or the GO Team, but only through May 5.

DesBorder Beach Cleanup on Friday, July 5

Leading up to July 5th DesBorder will encourage our youth groups and schools to participate in art-making and educational activities promoting environmental awareness.

A sculpture in the shape of a whale (want a chance to name the whale?) and created from repurposed materials, will be at the heart of the first cleanup in OB and will be the start of our whale’s migration to neighboring coastal community cleanup events throughout the year. DesBorder brings communities together to tackle our waterway pollution. Learn more about the project here.
