Thank you to everyone for joining us at Kate Sessions Park for the Annual Club Picnic! We enjoyed a perfect afternoon and made some new friends. A few pictures are below. This Thursday, we will explore the state of education in San Diego, proposing a rate payer advocate to negotiate with SDG&E, a candidate forum for City Attorney and "Getting the word out: A toolbox for promoting the achievements of the Biden Administration."

Meeting Highlights:

  • Cody Petterson will speak to us about the current state of education in San Diego and California.

  • Wendy Gelernter will help us to "Get the word out: A toolbox for promoting the achievements of the Biden Administration."

  • The Club will strategize about a proposal to select an advocate to represent rate payers in negotiations with San Diego Gas & Electric - Howard Wayne - will shall present a draft resolution and members will discuss the formation of a committee to forward the proposal.

State of Education in San Diego


Doctor Petterson will be talking to us about the current state of education in San Diego and California more broadly, his experiences over the last year on the Board, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for San Diego Unified and its communities. Dr. Cody Petterson represents the Pacific Beach area (as well as Point Loma, Mission Bay, La Jolla, and University City) on the San Diego Unified School Board. He holds an undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, a Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from UCSD. He sits on the Governing Board of the San Diego River Conservancy and is a former member of the Executive Committee of Sierra Club San Diego and the Board of the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego. He is a native La Jollan, ocean swimmer, native plant enthusiast, and proud father of two children—Sequoia, 7, and Bardot, 10.

Getting the word out: A toolbox for promoting the achievements of the Biden Administration


An active member of the PB Democratic Club since 2017, Wendy Gelernter also leads the group Take Action San Diego, which she founded in 2019. A chapter of the national organization Swing Left, Take Action San Diego serves as a resource for information, education, training and actions that will further the goals of electoral success and adoption of progressive policies at the local, state and national levels. With over 1,300 supporters, the group is currently involved in local efforts around criminal justice reform and homelessness, as well as national issues including reproductive rights, voting rights and supporting candidates who share those values. Wendy is a retired agricultural scientist, who began her career as an organizer for the United Farmworkers Union, and who went on to earn a Ph.D. in entomology in 1984 from the University of California, researching safer alternatives to the pesticides that were endangering farmworkers, consumers and the environment. Until their retirement, she and her husband Larry Stowell were co-owners of PACE Consulting, an internationally recognized leader in research, education, extension and agronomic services in support of the development and implementation of sustainable crop management strategies.
